Student Activities
The importance of the student activities program to the total development of a university-model school should not be underestimated. The opportunity to help develop students by accessing desires, interests, aptitudes, and motivations that they already have offers untold advantages. With the students already motivated from within, involvement in these activities may be the reason some students will more naturally want to develop practical life skills like goal-setting and time management.
There are also some additional secondary benefits that come to families through the student activities program that should be understood as a part of this program. First, they give parents yet one more positive point of connection with their children as they move into junior high and then high school. At a time when parents may be less involved academically, they can remain involved relationally through the natural venue of the student's positive interests. These activities also facilitate inter-family relationships as well as provide safe, supervised family gathering places.
There are several requirements of a university-model school that involve this program:
- Participation in student activities that is conditional upon satisfactory academic performance.
- Integrated instructional models that include parents in appropriate roles.
- Professional instructors able to work in partnership with parents.
- High standards emphasizing character and a strong student work ethic.
