You might have noticed our new aeroponic Tower Garden in the Den during Back to School Days. That is the brainchild of our own Mrs. Raeanna Pitzer, who teaches our Farm2Fork elective classes. It was Mrs. Pitzer’s passion for clean eating that was the genesis for the elective that began in 2013.
Over the summer, Mrs. Pitzer attended a Captain Planet Teacher Workshop where she expanded her knowledge of how clean eating can reinforce what students are learning in the classroom. While there, Mrs. Pitzer learned about, applied for, and received a grant for our garden area here at Cornerstone Prep. Her tenacity and devotion to Farm2Fork and our school are so appreciated.
What was the most interesting thing you learned this summer and why?
One of the most interesting things I learned this summer was when I attended the Captain Planet Teacher workshop was how SO many subjects could be taught through a garden. When a school has a garden and teachers use it to do hands-on projects over major subject matter, magic occurs.
History lessons over victory gardens during war times, geometry with garden bed layouts, science with weather, soil, and insects, the list is endless. My favorite is the economics side where my kids are learning with the entrepreneur class on selling projections, spreadsheets on buying and selling and profit margins.
You are obviously passionate about clean eating. Why do you think God placed this passion in your life?
I am passionate about health. I so desire for my kids and family to be as healthy as they can be. To me it feels like a way to honor our bodies therefore honoring God. We are placed on this Earth to serve our God and we need to be healthy to do that. I find teaching healthy eating and healthy habits to children gives me the same feeling when I teach my own kids to eat right.
When I am still and I listen to the word, he constantly reminds me that I am doing right by him. He is opening so many doors for us at Cornerstone.
What do you think are the benefits for our students?
These students are getting hands on experience with cooking, tasting, gardening and overall plant production. They are learning life skills that they can apply in the real world. With around 30% of children being overweight or obese it is critical to teach better eating habits.
What do you think are the benefits for Cornerstone Prep with all the work you are doing?
Well I hope that parents appreciate the effort we are doing to instill good eating habits within their children. I believe the benefits are a healthier work environment, easier access to local, organic food as well as a reminder that we care about everyone and their health.
