The iceberg is a great picture of leadership because so much of our influence comes from qualities we can’t see on the outside. It’s the stuff below the surface. I estimate 90% of our leadership is made up from our character.
And, our character is the sum total of our:
- Self-discipline (The ability to do what’s right even if you don’t feel like it)
- Core Values (Principles you live by that enable you to take a moral stand)
- Sense of Identity (A realistic self-image based on your gifts and personality)
- Emotional security (The capacity to be emotionally stable and consistent)

FROM PASTOR BRANDON
This is an important leadership characteristic for everyone to grasp. Pastor Brandon reminds everyone that God doesn’t look at the outside, but rather the inside, at our hearts. First Samuel 16:7 tells us that God judges persons differently than humans do. Men and women look at the face; God looks into the heart.
Luke 6:43-45 says A good tree can't produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can't produce good fruit. What you say flows from what is in your heart. That is why no matter how good you look on the outside won't change you are.
God wants us to live inside out. What excites God is to see that what is in our hearts reflect what is in His heart.
Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Your character directly correlates with your relationship with Jesus.
Christians need to remember to never solely to rely on their talents alone. A talent without a pure Christ-like character can lead to unwise choices. Develop and deploy your talents as your character grows closer to the heart of Jesus!
