If you attended Cornerstone’s Fine Arts Showcase evening, VISION, in February, you know what an outstanding arts program we have and how many talented young artists attend here.
Recently, 26 of our students, under the instruction of Jill Barrett, our wonderful art teacher, attended the Mt. Bethel Christian Academy first annual invitational art show.
These 26 participants submitted 30 entries, receiving high honors. The biggest honor of the day went to sophomore Megan Powell, who won Best in Show for high school. “I was kind of shocked because before this show, the highest award I had ever received was an excellent rating,” said Megan.
“When I learned I earned the Superior rating for two of my pieces, I already counted it a good day. Then when they announced the Best in Show award, I felt incredibly accomplished and honored.”
Megan’s piece that won Best in Show was an assigned piece for the art class she takes at Cornerstone with Mrs. Barrett. She described how she created the winning piece, “My artwork...is a self-portrait created by using a black and white photograph with a strong contrast that I drew lines on separating the light and dark areas. The idea of the project was to create distinct color boxes with little blending.”
Megan added that “While my reason for making this piece was because it was an assignment, my reason for making it the way I did was because I like to stay challenged in my artwork and work outside the box.”
Art Teacher Jill Barrett was understandably proud of all the Cornerstone students that participated in the show, “Qualified judges scored each entry and provided constructive feedback for the students. After browsing the impressive artwork on display, students worked together to produce a collaborative artwork in a hands-on workshop. There was plenty of glitter and lots of smiles!”
Congratulations to all our students who participated in the Mt. Bethel First Invitational Art Show!
