Cornerstone Prep is celebrating its 12th year of University-Model schooling. One of our elementary teachers, Mrs. Lisa Sullivan, is celebrating a milestone this year: Teaching her first second-generation student, Benjamin Curry, son of former student, Caleb.
In 1995 Mrs. Sullivan, a first-year 5th grade teacher at Cumberland Christian Academy, was fresh out of school and sporting the latest style in backpacks, an NO FEAR bag, thanks to the generosity of her neighbors, one a famous WWF wrestler. “All of my students in 1995 thought it was the COOLEST! By default I guess it made me the cool, hip teacher!
I saved the backpack all these years. It didn't seem right to get rid of it for some reason. Little did I know there was a cool story ahead for the plaid flannel backpack! I put in on a shelf, and it has been there for years.
Fast forward 21 years, I ran into Caleb's mother this past summer, and she said, 'Do you remember that No FEAR backpack? All your students thought you were the coolest teacher because of it!' At that moment I knew why God had me keep the backpack for so many years. To give it to my first second-generation student!”
"I decided it was time to pass the backpack to him. I knew it wouldn't be a big deal to him, but it was for me. He [Benjamin] had no idea of the "miles and years" that backpack has passed. Every once in awhile, I'd clean out the closet but never get rid of the backpack. It reminds me of the Disney movie Toy Story: It has a whole new generation of fun left in it!”
Mrs. Sullivan is thrilled to be teaching a second-generation student, though she does admit to feeling a bit old. “I can't bring myself to call Caleb "Mr. Curry" as I do with other parents. Although he is an amazing adult, he will always be one of my ‘kids.’,” said Mrs. Sullivan.
“No matter how he (or any other former student) gets I always feel a bit like a mother bird...they leave the nest, but they always stay in your heart! It is wonderful to see how he married an amazing girl, has three precious children and has passed on the values and love for Christ that I observed 21 years ago.”
She credits Cornerstone Prep’s University-Model® as helping make this connection possible. “We provide a unique opportunity to others that fosters relationships with families that last a lifetime! The lines of communication are always open allowing us to connect on a personal level.”
