Every student is a star in their special way, but each year only one student is chosen as the STAR Student for the school year. We are proud to announce that Senior Sydney Scott is 2017’s STAR Student.
“When I heard I had been chosen as STAR student, I was initially just surprised,” said Sydney, “ There are so many other incredibly hardworking students in my grade, so being chosen as STAR student was a huge shock and an exciting honor.”
Each STAR Student selects a teacher that has had a significant impact on their life, and Sydney picked Jillian Cosgrove, director of student counseling. “I chose Mrs. Cosgrove because she isn't only a teacher — I think I speak for all the seniors when I say she's more of an adoptive mom for our grade,” said Sydney, “ She's helped me personally through a lot of tough places and worked so hard to give us the best opportunities we can get.”
The Student Selects A Teacher
With only a few months left at Cornerstone, Sydney is making college plans, “It's starting to look like I'll be going to Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. I'm thrilled to be able to attend because it was one of my top colleges right off the bat. I've been accepted into Mercer's Honors Program for engineering, which is really exciting. Currently, I plan to major in environmental engineering, minor in Spanish, and participate in competitive swim next year.”
What It Takes to be a STAR
These are a few of the requirements:
- Be a legally enrolled senior in an accredited Georgia public or private high school. A legally enrolled senior is a student who has registered – and been accepted – as a student in the school and will graduate with the 2017 senior class.
- Take the three-part or two-part SAT any year on any national testing date through and including November 5, 2016. Score highest on a single test date (scores may not be combined from two or more test dates) on the *"old" three-part or "new" two-part SAT among qualified seniors in the school.
- At the end of the student's junior year, be in the top 10 percent or be among the top 10 students numerically, whichever category provides the largest number of eligible students in the school.
