It is completely crazy to think that in just three short days my high school career will have come to an end. There are many bittersweet parts to my Cornerstone story. While I am ready to get out in the world and see where God takes me, there is no way any of it would be possible without my time here at Cornerstone. So even though they have been preparing me for this since the first day of my freshman year, I am saddened by the parts of me that I will be leaving behind. Well, here it goes, MY Cornerstone story.
How it all Began
I first came to Cornerstone my freshman year of high school. I knew one person in my class because we were on the volleyball team together, and I was beyond terrified of the day that was before me. That, I can assure you, did not last long. I will never forget that on my first day, Mrs. Gurniewicz, director of admissions, personally sought me out by name to ask how I was doing.
This lifted a weight off my shoulders. Not only did she know who I was, but she took the time to make sure I was doing okay! The love of the teachers and staff only grew from there. I know that I can to go any staff member for anything, and they would all do everything in their power to help me. I also know that this will not end when I go to college. The bonds that have been formed are ones that will never be broken.
"While the future may be uncertain, thanks to Cornerstone I feel confident to face any trial and know I will succeed to the best of my ability."
What I've Learned About Leadership
During my senior year, I have served as the Beta Club President. This has provided me with an amazing opportunity to see what it truly means to lead. We have about 40 members in the club, and it is my responsibility to organize service projects and ensure all needed items are available as well as manage schedules to verify needed personnel will be in attendance. It is a lot of hard work, but it has taught me how to better manage time, resources, and people in an effective way that benefits the student body and committee.
As part of our school-wide house system, we have a House Council that was elected by teachers and administration to coordinate and lead school wide events. This, too, has been an amazing experience because, in a way, I am a voice for the entire student body. I was also the editor of the yearbook this year and was able to help guide and lead the staff in creating a book, which we hope will be treasured by all.
How the University Model® Helped Me Thrive
One of the best experiences each year has been IMPACT week. Because of this, I have been able to go on four mission trips that I would have otherwise never been able to participate in. This week each year is one of the students’ favorites. With such a variety of trip choices, there is a perfect trip for everyone.
During this week, we lead, learn, serve, and make important connections with friends and staff members. We always seek to be a blessing to others, but undoubtedly, we are always the ones blessed and IMPACTed by those we seek to serve. Cornerstone has opened up so many opportunities for me to work and lead and has equipped me with the skills that I will carry with me for a lifetime.
My life after Cornerstone Prep
While the future may be uncertain, thanks to Cornerstone I feel confident to face any trial and know I will succeed to the best of my ability. No amount of words can describe how grateful I am for the staff, administration, and students of Cornerstone for everything they have done for me, and I know my life has forever been changed for the better because of this wonderful school.
