Cornerstone Prep is blessed with an outstanding and amazing staff. One of the remarkable things about University-Model® schools is the fact that teachers only teach in the subject area in which they are passionate.
Because our K-12 school functions as an university--where professors teach in their subject area and concentrate their attention where they are most interested--our staff has the freedom and joy to do the same--but work with younger minds.
Over and over again, we see this pay off with passionate teachers and passionate students.
I get an email at least once a week showing me one of my students who has gone home and taken ownership of their health and made a delicious and nutritious meal for their family.
Mrs. Pitzer shares about the Farm2Fork growth & teaching at a UM school...
One of the most interesting things I learned this summer was when I attended the Captain Planet Teacher workshop was how SO many subjects could be taught through a garden. When a school has a garden and teachers use it to do hands-on projects over major subject matter, magic occurs.
History lessons over victory gardens during war times, geometry with garden bed layouts, science with weather, soil, and insects, the list is endless. My favorite is the economics side where my kids are learning with the entrepreneur class on selling projections, spreadsheets on buying and selling and profit margins.
I absolutely love our model of school. This model allows the students and parents to work together for a common goal. There isn't a parent out there who doesn't want their child to eat more veggies. With our type of school the things being taught in my classroom is easily brought home and applied in the kitchen and out in their personal gardens. These students are getting hands on experience with cooking, tasting, gardening and overall plant production. They are learning life skills that they can apply in the real world. With around 30% of children being overweight or obese it is critical to teach better eating habits.
