The last several weeks were marked by some big life moments for me. My husband and I celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary on Sep 26, I celebrated my 50th birthday on Oct 29, and my family lost our sweet Great Dane, Watson, on Nov 4.
Life is like that. It is filled with beautiful moments, like spending a relaxing week in Barbados with my husband. Then there are confounding moments, like coming to the realization that I've lived half a century (How can that be possible?!). Sprinkled in along the way are gut-wrenching moments, like saying goodbye to a pet that I adored. What I've kept coming back to these last few weeks is that I need to be thankful for all of these moments in my life.
When we're asked what we are thankful for, it's easy to list the things that make us happy or that mean the most to us. When good things happen, we're full of praise. But, it's hard for us to go through a painful or uncomfortable situation and come out on the other side thankful for the experience.
The Bible tells us in 1 Thessalonians 5:18 to "Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you who belong to Christ Jesus."
We can find joy in all of life's moments if we shift our focus off of our pain and move it to the God who knows what's best for us. I am dwelling on this verse in these days leading up to Thanksgiving, and I pray that you will, too.
