I rarely listen to the actual radio anymore. Do you? My Spotify app is always open and ready with a variety of playlists - Christian Mix, All Out 80s, and Songs to Sing in the Shower are a few.

If you are a Spotify user, you know that at the end of the year the app generates a playlist for you called Your Top Songs. When I tap on that box and hit play, I am reminded of the lyrics and melodies that provided the score for my life in 2019.

One song that really stands out is "Do It Again" by Elevation Worship. (Listen to it, if you can.) Last year at this time there were mountains I needed moved, walls I needed to fall, and changes that had to be made. So many things looked and felt impossible. That is when the Lord drew me into His Word through a Bible study with freshman girls. We dove deep into Romans 5:3-5, spending months on these few verses.

"Not only (do we boast in the hope of the glory of God), but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.” (NIV, italics are mine.)

The first half of 2019 for me was spent waiting, suffering, and persevering. There were days I embraced the process, knowing that as I persevered my character would be developed and my hope increased. But, there were days when I grew tired. I wished to be rescued rather than proven. I’m sure you’ve been there. Whether it is your trial or that of someone you love, we don’t like suffering. Persevering in the pain is hard and it seems to last forever.

What I learned in 2019 is that there is a purpose to our suffering, Christ is with us in it, and a victory is coming! There are things in my life that I would never want to experience again, but I am still thankful for them because of the fruit they produced in me.

If you are going through a trial right now, I want to encourage you to embrace what God is doing in you and those around you as you persevere.

Romans 8:18 says, “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.” (NIV) Let the Word of God fill you with hope and know that in those moments when you doubt, the Lord is gracious to carry you still.

Standing here in 2020 with those mountains moved and the walls lying in rubble around my feet, I am grateful. Incredibly, eternally grateful. I know there will be more trials to come, but my hope has increased and by faith I can sing,

“I've seen You move, come move the mountains
And I believe, I'll see You do it again
You made a way, where there was no way
And I believe, I'll see You do it again

Your promise still stands
Great is Your faithfulness, faithfulness
I'm still in Your hands
This is my confidence, You never failed me yet”

I wonder what makes up Your Top Songs of 2019. Whatever it is, I hope it speaks hope and life into your soul. You are loved and prayed for.
