A Chromebook is a laptop of a different breed. Instead of Windows or macOS, Chromebooks run Google's Chrome OS. These machines are designed to be used primarily while connected to the Internet, with most applications and documents living in the cloud. Low prices, long battery life and ease of use are just a few reasons why Chromebooks are the right choice for Cornerstone staff and students.
The purpose of implementing a Bring Your Own Device, BYOD, program at Cornerstone Preparatory Academy is to ensure your student has access to a device on a daily basis to enhance and enrich the scope of their learning experience.
The BYOD program at Cornerstone allows all students in grades 5-12 to bring their device to school to be used for educational purposes. Students will be able to access the CPA Wi-Fi network, CPASTUDENTS, through their devices. We are now requiring new Cornerstone Prep students in grades 5-12 to bring a Chromebook as their BYOD device.
It is the responsibility of each Cornerstone family to ensure that their Chromebook is compatible with the apps and extensions used to produce, edit, and transmit documentation that students need to complete assignments. Computers that do not meet the minimum requirements may experience limited or no accessibility to Cornerstone systems. You can learn more about our minimum requirements at your family meeting or by viewing our IT Director's blog.
Starting in February, we introduced the SafeStudents Online program to parents of all students in grades 5-12. Parents are able to monitor their children’s social media activity for inappropriate or potentially dangerous posts and will receive alerts to help them take action when necessary.
SafeStudents Online balances protection with privacy to encourage collaboration and communication between parents and children. The cloud-based solution helps parents keep their children safe from online threats such as cyberbullying, online predators, and damaged reputations. Parents never need to ask for their children’s passwords, and the online activity is monitored privately by parents, with the school having no access to the content.
“For several years we’ve listened as parents have expressed constant concern over how to monitor their child’s social media presence. It seems that almost monthly there is a new social media app students discover; some are very benign, but some put our kids in danger and open up what kids think are safe places that can turn into breeding grounds for hurt and pain.
Cornerstone Prep has been looking for something we could offer to parents that takes the school out of the business of overseeing social media, and give parents something that empowers them to be vigilant in protecting their children. "When we found SafeStudents Online and their approach of empowering parents by giving them greater awareness of what their kids are doing, we were excited to form a partnership with them.
Our goal is to protect our kids from all the negatives of social media, and in this day and age, that is a challenge.
