Congratulations to the Cornerstone golf team for winning second place in the GICAA Division II-AA state golf tournament on May 6. Congratulations also go to Collin Burger, 10, for earning 4th place All State and MJ Hodge, 8, for earning 2nd place All State.
The team went into the state tournament coming off of a first-place win at the region tournament on Apr 18.
"Last year we felt blessed and grateful to qualify for State," said Coach Terry Burger. "This year however, I had a feeling the boys would do very well based on the way they were playing. The team was focused, determined, and ready to end their season with their best performance."
The Cougars faced a unique challenge of being the only team in the tournament with just four players, meaning that each player's score would count in the final standings.
"We didn't have a #5 or #6 safety net to use in case one of our other guys didn't play well," said Coach Burger. "These four guys went out and battled knowing they had to go out and give their best effort."
"Since there were four of us, we always had to be on top of our game," said MJ.
The final standings showed that the Cougars indeed fought hard and clawed their way to a second-place state finish, missing out on the first-place trophy by only one stroke. Both Collin and MJ had their lowest tournament scores of the season for 18 holes and improved by 20 strokes over last year at state.
Needless to say, the future looks bright for Cougar golf. With such a young team comprised of one seventh-grader, two eighth-graders, and a 10th-grader, the Cougars are eager and motivated to bring home a state championship banner next year.
