A Tour, A Class, A Calling
A campus visit. A college class. A new sparked interest. For Cornerstone senior Chloe Adams, a journey that started with a simple college fair, helped her to discover both a college she’s excited to attend and the fields she wants to pursue. Today, she shares how this unexpected honors opportunity changed the course of her plans and how God always goes before us!
A New Direction: How One College Fair Changed Everything
At the beginning of my junior year, I had my sights set on attending Samford University. However, everything changed after Cornerstone’s college fair when I spoke with the Anderson University representative. I had never even heard of Anderson before, but I became very interested in the college. So much so that a few weeks later, I drove with my mom two and a half hours up to Anderson, South Carolina, and went on a tour of the campus. I immediately fell in love with it. The campus and buildings are beautiful, there is a church on every corner of the surrounding area, the dorms are cozy, the food is delicious, and the culture seemed like exactly what I have been looking for.
A Shift in Plans
After the tour, Anderson held first place in my mind above Samford. Shortly afterward, I received an exclusive invitation to attend their AU Scholars Day, where I would get a chance to meet professors and take classes. I quickly signed up and dragged my friend and former Cornerstone student, Sophia Abelita, to accompany me. We were given a few options of hour-and-a-half-long classes we could take led by the college’s favorite professors. We chose to attend Faith in Modern Times, Engineering, and Business Marketing.
A Day of Discovery
First, we went to their Bible class because I wanted to grasp Anderson’s faith and theology. I thoroughly enjoyed the class, the professor’s teaching style, and our discussion. Afterward, Sophia and I attended the engineering class. Neither she nor I especially like engineering, but we had a blast making slime and testing our recipe against other types of slime. Finally, we went to the Business Marketing class. This was the class I was most excited about since I plan on majoring in Business Management in college. In the class, we studied the different methods of advertising, why they work, and how major companies are implementing them.
Finally, a local small business owner came into the class and told us about her job, current advertising, and problems she was having with her marketing strategy. Our job was to create a business plan that would help promote and expand her business. I had so much fun coming up with different ideas to help her social media reach the right audience and bring them into the store. While my group did not win, we were told by the professor that we had the best presenting skills and had impressed him. I left the class feeling like I had discovered something new about myself. I had never thought about marketing before, but an hour and a half had just flown by because I was so immersed in the topic. I felt as if I could have spent weeks pouring over that project, studying the business, and making a real-life plan to give to a business owner.
Finding My Future
Now, I am looking into double majoring in Business Management and Marketing. Through a long path that began with Cornerstone’s college fair, I found a college I would love to attend and discovered the majors I would like to study there and I’m so excited about what’s ahead!
