Beloved Coach Cowart Leaves A Legacy At Cornerstone

Cornerstone Varsity Basketball Head Coach, Josh Cowart, who came to Cornerstone seven years ago with decades of experience as a player and a successful coach, is moving on.

"No matter what we did in the game, good or bad, he always loved us. I’d be a very different person today if it wasn’t for Coach Cowart."  - Elijah Spruill '21

“Coach Cowart has strengthened and sustained a great program over the years. He has done a great job developing the basketball program at Cornerstone. His leadership, knowledge of basketball, and his ability to connect with the students is going to be hard to replace." - Ken Campbell, Athletic Director

Making School History

“Coach Cowart began instilling his processes and systems into a group of boys who didn’t know much about such things. He started with the basics like how to warm up properly and then progressed to installing plays. Fast forward to a record-breaking year, the best record in school history. This was the result of lots of hours of hard work, summer camps, and the establishment of a winning culture that attracted new players who wanted to reach new levels of success.” - Mark Cundiff, Cornerstone alumni parent.

The numerous highlights of Coach Cowart's impressive career with the Cougars include his 2019/2020 team making the state championship and finishing runners-up.

Additional first-time achievements include;

  •  First win over King’s Academy

  •  First win over Cumberland Christian Academy

  •  First time to qualify for the State Tournament

  •  First time to win a State Tournament game

  •  First time to reach State Final Four

  •  First time to reach State Championship game

  •  First time attending Nationals

The 2020/2021 team made the elite eight and in 2021/2022, they made the final four and made history as they won the first-ever region championship for Cornerstone Preparatory Basketball!

Leaving A Legacy

Throughout the years, Coach Cowart has instilled and modeled many principles in his student-athletes, including hard work, respect, commitment, fairness, and good citizenship. A man of integrity and a respected colleague, Cowart has also provided leadership and promoted camaraderie among his team.

Coach Cowart’s First Team!

“One of my favorite memories of my senior year at CPA was the day after we had a home game vs Shiloh, on the back end of a back-to-back I was getting some shots up prior to our home game vs North Kissimmee. The previous night I had been given a technical foul for yelling at the ref on a block/charge call. Coach pulled me out of the game and rightfully corrected me in front of the entire team. I deserved it. Soon after, Coach came and put his arm around me and told me that he was proud of me despite the technical, that I had a really good game, and that he loved me. This meant the world to me, a great reminder of what I already knew. Coach always cares for us." - Elijah Spruill, ‘21”

“Senior year we were getting ready for one last tournament run, and we were all very stressed and felt a lot of pressure. My senior group had been with Coach since the 8th grade, and we really wanted to make a statement. We had been practicing nonstop for about a week and a half, and one day during practice Coach did something different. We went through warmups, and then he turned on the speakers and started playing music. We had played music before, but this didn’t seem like the time or place. However, to me it felt like the air had been let out of a balloon. Coach was laughing, joking around, being his usual self, and I don’t think 100 more days of practice could have done what that one day did for us.” - Joshua Greene, ‘20

"Well, where do I start? Coach Cowart took me under this wing when I was in 8th grade. He told me that he was going to invest in me and that he knew I wouldn't let him down. There were times where I felt like I wasn't as good as I thought he needed me to be, and I felt like I wasn't living up to what he wanted. However, one day he told me that yes he was investing in me for basketball, but he also was investing in me as a young man. I think him pouring into me and helping me with my journey with Christ was the greatest gift he could've given me as a young man. I want to continue that legacy of his and invest in other people as I go on in life. Hopefully, I turned out to be what he expected me to be, but if I didn't I'm just glad we won him something!" - Devon Sweat, ‘22

"One of my favorite things about Coach Cowart is his saying during games. I find it funny when he tells the team “We haven’t hit a shot since Moby Dick was a minnow!” I want to thank him for all he’s done for the sports program at Cornerstone." - Ken Campbell

Looking Ahead

Although we are immensely sad to see Coach Cowart go, we are excited to announce that our Athletic Director, Ken Campbell, will step in as the new boys’ varsity basketball head coach. Campbell was the head varsity basketball coach from 2000-2003 at Dalat International School and Morrison Academy from 2005-2015. At Cornerstone, he has also been the assistant coach for JV and Varsity Basketball and was the MS Head Coach from 2016-2019. The future looks bright for Cornerstone Basketball!
