Building Courage Through Play: A Cornerstone Family Story

Building Courage Through Play: A Cornerstone Family Story

Sometimes the most meaningful ministries begin in the simplest moments. Reggie and Tanesha Brun, parents of four, never imagined that a simple afternoon of play with their kids could turn into a ministry, and now, through their daughter Moriah’s experience at Cornerstone, they’re seeing that vision grow in new ways.

Building Courage Through Play

“Something as small as playing together outside became a reminder to our family of how much kids need movement, imagination, and real connection,” Reggie shared. “We never imagined God would use it to impact so many others.”

What started as a dad and his youngest son playing with toy swords at the park has grown into something far bigger than a game. Swords and Shields was born out of a desire to pull children away from screens, get them moving outdoors, and give them space to connect, imagine, and grow.

As other children noticed the laughter, teamwork, and excitement, they naturally asked to join. What began as one family’s intentional time together quickly turned into a welcoming circle, one where no child felt left out, and every child had a role.

Before long, a simple afternoon activity became a gathering point, a place where kids could belong, play, and be kids again.

The Heart Behind Swords and Shields

At its core, Swords and Shields exists to help children grow, physically, socially, and spiritually.

“We wanted to give kids something meaningful, something that would pull them away from screens and remind them what it feels like to play, to imagine, and to belong,” he explained. The mission is simple but powerful: to encourage kids to be active, unplug from screens, and build real-life connections through imaginative play.

Through structured games and role-playing, children are learning more than how to swing a sword or defend a teammate.

They’re developing confidence, courage, cooperation, and character. They practice problem-solving, learn how to work together, and discover the joy of healthy competition rooted in respect.

Faith in Action

While Swords and Shields is full of fun and movement, it is also deeply grounded in Biblical principles. Children are encouraged to play honorably, follow rules, and treat one another with kindness and integrity.

By stepping into the roles of heroes and protectors, kids begin to understand courage, patience, and standing up for what’s right, concepts that echo Scripture in ways that are tangible and age-appropriate. It’s faith lived out through action, teamwork, and self-control.

Why Cornerstone Was the Right Fit

This heart for faith, character, and intentional growth is exactly why this family chose Cornerstone. They were seeking a school that would align with their values, integrate faith into every part of learning, and offer a nurturing, individualized environment.

“Cornerstone felt like a place where our child would be known, not just academically, but personally and spiritually,”

“It was clear this was a community that cared about the whole child. From the beginning, Cornerstone felt like home,”  Reggie shared.

The school’s model has allowed their daughter, Moriah, to thrive academically while also growing spiritually. The flexibility, emphasis on character development, and strong sense of community have been a gift, not just to their daughter, Moriah, but to their entire family.

Growing Beyond the Classroom

Through Cornerstone, their daughter, Moriah (9), has gained confidence, curiosity, and a deeper understanding of Biblical truth.

“We’ve watched her grow in ways we couldn’t have planned, learning perseverance, responsibility, and time management, while also deepening her faith,” he said. “The support from this community has meant more to us than words can express.” Just as importantly, she has developed life skills that will last far beyond her school years, perseverance, responsibility, time management, and resilience.

Like Swords and Shields, Cornerstone values whole-child development: mind, body, and spirit. Both reflect the belief that children flourish when they are known, supported, and encouraged to grow in wisdom and grace.

As we enter enrollment season, stories like this remind us why Christian education matters. Cornerstone is more than academics; it’s a partnership with families, a place where faith is lived out daily, and a community committed to raising courageous, Christ-centered students.
