First Grader and a Freshman on Mission

First Grader and a Freshman on Mission

When God calls us to step beyond our comfort zones, He often reveals His goodness in ways we could never imagine. This Fall Break, two Cornerstone families, the Rameys and the Smiths, answered that call by traveling to the Dominican Republic on a family mission trip with NorthStar Church. What they experienced there left an unforgettable mark on their hearts and deepened their understanding of what it means to serve and love like Jesus.

Josh Smith (9) and Avana Grace Ramey (1)

The Ramey Family: Faith in Action

For the Ramey family, this trip was the culmination of many prayers and a powerful testimony of obedience. “After attending a local preschool at a church, we prayed for God to lead us to a Christian school that would be in alignment with our family values,” said Mrs. Ramey. “Finding Cornerstone right before Avana Grace started kindergarten was an answered prayer.”
Avana Grace, now a Cornerstone first grader, has always had a heart for helping others. After participating in Cornerstone Cares last March, she was eager to serve again, this time internationally. When NorthStar Church announced a family mission opportunity to the Dominican Republic through SCORE International, the Rameys knew God was opening a new door.

Avana Grace became the youngest short-term missionary on the trip, traveling with her parents and older sister, Aria, who helps with her home days. From shopping for missionaries and preparing for Vacation Bible School to packing and delivering food bags to families in need, the Rameys embraced every opportunity to share God’s love.

“One of the most memorable moments was watching Avana Grace quietly draw and write with her Dominican peers,” Mrs. Ramey recalled. “Though they didn’t share the same language, God’s love bridged the gap. Their innocent friendship reminded us that His love knows no barriers.”

The Rameys were also touched by the connection between home and mission. “When Avana Grace delivered a bag of food to a family, it was extra special because her older sister had sewn the bag back home,” Mrs. Ramey said. “It was a beautiful reminder that God weaves our stories together, even across miles.”

The trip brought new appreciation for simple things, clean water, working toilets, and everyday comforts often taken for granted. Yet, more than anything, it deepened their desire to continue serving. “We assumed we were going to help,” Mrs. Ramey said, “but what we learned is that we were the ones changed. We are praying about returning each year and encouraging other families to consider missions, too. God’s grace truly extends beyond cultural boundaries.”

The Smith Family: Gratitude and Growth

For the Smith family, Leo, Karly, and their son Josh, this same trip offered a powerful reminder of perspective, gratitude, and God’s movement around the world. Josh, a Cornerstone freshman who began at the school in fifth grade, said the experience strengthened his faith and opened his eyes to the joy of serving others.

“Upon arriving, we were nervous because none of us speak fluent Spanish,” shared Mrs. Smith. “But we quickly saw God moving through believers in the Dominican Republic who are faithfully serving their communities every day.”

The Smiths partnered with local churches to host Vacation Bible Schools, visited schools, and delivered food to families most in need. One of their favorite memories came early on, when they handed out soccer balls and bracelets to local children. “Their excitement over such small gifts was humbling,” Mrs. Smith said. “It really put into perspective how much we take for granted.”

Josh especially enjoyed playing with the children and connecting through laughter and games, even without a shared language. “He said he feels he has a heart for missions now,” Mrs. Smith shared. “He’s already looking forward to when God will allow him to go again.”

Delivering food to families was another deeply moving experience. Through translators, the Smiths heard stories of gratitude and perseverance that left a lasting impact. “These families welcomed us into their homes with open hearts,” Mrs. Smith said. “Despite having so little, their joy and faith were incredible. We came home changed, more grateful, more aware, and more eager to serve.”

One Mission, Many Hearts

For both the Ramey and Smith families, the Dominican Republic mission trip was more than an adventure; it was an awakening. They witnessed firsthand how God’s love transcends borders, languages, and cultures, and how even the smallest act of kindness can be used for His glory.

“We encourage other families to step out in faith,” both families shared. “If God calls you to go, say yes. You’ll be amazed at how He uses you, and how He changes you in the process.”

At Cornerstone, we celebrate families like the Rameys and Smiths who model Christ’s command to “go and make disciples of all nations.” Their stories remind us that mission work doesn’t just happen abroad; it begins in our hearts, our homes, and our willingness to serve wherever God leads.

That same heart for service is woven into life at Cornerstone. From our Elementary students serving through Cornerstone Cares, bringing joy and help to our local community, to our High School students dedicating a week each year to serve on an IMPACT trip, our students are learning that missions isn’t a one-time experience; it’s a lifestyle of obedience and compassion.

May we all be inspired to follow their example, listening for God’s call, stepping beyond what’s comfortable, and trusting Him to use us right where we are, whether across the street or across the ocean.
