Forecasting the Future

For most students, checking the weather is just about deciding whether to grab an umbrella or wear a jacket. But for Cornerstone eighth-grader Nate Carroll, it’s much more than that! Nate has turned his lifelong fascination with the skies into a meaningful contribution to his community by becoming a certified Weather Spotter for the National Weather Service (NWS).

A Passion For Weather

Nate, now in his third year at Cornerstone, has always been captivated by the weather. His curiosity led him to research meteorology and pursue his goal of becoming a Weather Spotter. “I’ve always had a love and fascination with the weather,” he shares. That passion drove him to study various weather dynamics and phenomena, preparing him for the certification process.

What Does A Weather Spotter Do?

As a Certified Weather Spotter, Nate plays a crucial role in helping meteorologists provide accurate and timely weather alerts. He reports severe weather events such as hail, tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, and intense winds directly to the National Weather Service. These real-time reports help meteorologists refine their forecasts and issue more precise warnings, ultimately protecting lives and property.
“I have always observed weather, but my certification is new, and I look forward to reporting the next severe weather event,” he says.

Preparing For Certification

Becoming a certified Weather Spotter required dedication. Nate spent a year researching meteorology, learning about the development of supercell thunderstorms, and studying different weather events. Since becoming certified, he also monitors daily weather conditions using tools like NOAA outlooks, satellite imagery, and forecast models. In fact, he even has his own weather station, giving him real-time readings from his backyard!

A Future In Meteorology?

Nate’s love for weather has only grown since earning his certification. While he is considering a career in atmospheric sciences, he also has a strong interest in chemistry. “Anything in the scientific field I find interesting,” he explains. Whatever path he chooses, his dedication to science and discovery is evident.

Encouraging Other Students

For other middle schoolers interested in weather spotting, Nate has some simple advice: “Learn as much as possible about the dynamics of weather.” His enthusiasm for meteorology is contagious, and he hopes to inspire others to explore the world of weather science.

Beyond his love for the weather, Nate enjoys a variety of activities, including reading, biking, swimming, flying drones, hiking with his family, and spending time with friends.

As he continues his journey as a Weather Spotter, Nate is not only deepening his knowledge but also making a real impact on his community. Whether it’s tracking storms or analyzing data, he’s proof that a passion for science can lead to incredible opportunities—and even help keep people safe.

Braving the Elements- a message of encouragement to help you through life’s storms by Mrs. Hansen

Storms, whether physical or spiritual, have a way of shaking us. Our instinct may be to fight, to run, or to find a way out as quickly as possible.

But, there is strength in stillness.

"In quietness and confidence shall be your strength..." – Isaiah 30:15

When I was a child, every time a thunderstorm rolled in, my father had one rule: silence. The TV went off, movement was kept to a minimum, and under no circumstances were you to even think about taking a shower! We sat in stillness, waiting for the storm to pass. Back then, I didn’t understand why. But as I grew up, I realized he was teaching us more than just how to sit through a thunderstorm—he was teaching us how to endure life’s storms.

Instead of rushing to escape, be still.

Let your heart be quiet before the Lord. Ask Him what He wants to show you, what He wants you to learn.

The winds will die down.
The rain will stop.
The sun will shine again.

And when the storm passes, because it will, the sunrise will seem brighter, the birds will sound sweeter, and you will stand stronger. But for now, rest in His presence.

Let your faith be strengthened in the waiting. And trust the One who calms our storms.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, during life’s storms, hold me close and remind me that You are in control. Teach me to be still, to trust You, and to endure with patience. I know that in Your hands, all things will be made right. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
