Around Cornerstone: News

God Works in the Waiting

Before she was a mom, she was Mrs. Hilliard to her math students at Cornerstone. Her Cornerstone colleagues proved to be more like family than coworkers, as they became her prayer warriors during her infertility journey. And now, that answered prayer walks the Cornerstone hallways and is learning his letters in a Cornerstone kindergarten classroom! Today, if you are in a waiting season, we pray you are inspired to remain faithful through your challenges as you wait on God’s promises.

In the summer of 2008, I interviewed at Cornerstone. I was a new college graduate looking for a math teaching position. Thankfully, Mrs. Borders took a chance on me, and I was hired. Cornerstone was a dream job! The support that I felt from the entire administrative team was unmatched. My students were an absolute joy, and I loved spending my days with them. While at Cornerstone, I taught Pre-Algebra, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus. I was also honored to work with the best math team as the Secondary Math Department Chair. I cannot say enough about my time at Cornerstone, and what a blessing this school has been to my life.

My husband, Mark, and I walked through years of infertility while I was teaching at Cornerstone. My colleagues became friends. They were such a source of support for me during that time. In 2016, we decided to become foster parents. The staff and Cornerstone parents hosted the sweetest shower to prepare us for parenthood. After lots of training and paperwork, we welcomed our first foster son into our home in July of 2016 - a beautiful baby boy. We were immediately thrown into an unknown world of court hearings, visitations, caseworker visits, and WIC appointments. It was a whirlwind, but we were again met with so much love and support from my Cornerstone family. I continued teaching at Cornerstone until our foster son turned a year old. At that time, I made the bittersweet decision to finish my 9th year on staff at Cornerstone and become a stay-at-home mom.

The Hilliard Family

Two years later, we had the honor of finalizing our son’s adoption. Joshua officially became a Hilliard! We continued to foster, and three more sons have been added to our family. To everyone’s surprise, our three other foster sons’ cases all went to adoption as well. We now have four precious sons ages 6, 4, 3, and 2. They keep our home loud, our schedules full, and our hearts forever grateful.

"They keep our home loud, our schedules full, and our hearts forever grateful."

When it came time for our oldest, Joshua, to start kindergarten last year, Cornerstone was obviously at the top of our list. We brought him in for a kindergarten readiness assessment in the summer. After the assessment, Mrs. Daniel suggested that he might benefit from delaying kindergarten for a year to work on his fine motor skills and a few other areas that needed improvement. At that moment, I knew that the integrity of the administration at Cornerstone - something I had always admired - had not changed since I was a teacher here five years prior. Mrs. Daniel cared about our son and his success more than she cared about adding another name to the roster. As a parent, this spoke volumes. We decided to take Mrs. Daniel’s advice. We enrolled Joshua in an older preschool class, and he received six months of occupational therapy. This was absolutely the best choice for him, and I’m so glad that Mrs. Daniel pointed us in the right direction.

We were so excited to enroll Joshua in kindergarten at Cornerstone this year. He is thriving! It is such a “full circle” moment for my child to be at Cornerstone. My colleagues at Cornerstone spent years praying that Mark and I would have children during our infertility journey. They cried with me on hard days. Now the answer to all of those prayers walks the hallways and is learning his letters and sounds in a Cornerstone kindergarten classroom! This school has such a special place in my heart and I’m so grateful that we now get to experience it as Cornerstone parents.

Every story has a different testimony but if you are in a waiting season, Katrina would love to hear from you and have the opportunity to pray for you. And please remember this: as long as you are serving and loving Him right where you are, He is growing you, and using you for a great purpose!

“Wait for the Lord;
Be strong and let your heart take courage;
Yes, wait for the Lord.”

Psalm 27:14
