Around Cornerstone: News

Inviting Jesus Into Your School Year

Hey, amazing Cornerstone family!
My name is Michiliene Lorenz, and I am no stranger to the world of Cornerstone. I taught 7th grade English and high school Yearbook before we had children and decided back then that, when we did have kids, they’d have to come to Cornerstone Prep. I just love the “best of both worlds” – having more of an active role in their lives and education but not being solely responsible for all of their education, extracurriculars, and friendships - can I get an Amen?! Fast forward, we now have a daughter in 7th grade, a son in 5th grade, and next year, our youngest son will be attending 1st grade here at Cornerstone.

My husband and I have had the privilege and wild ride of being youth pastors at our church in Marietta for almost 19 years now. The hats I have worn throughout these almost two decades have given such a valuable perspective into the lives of our young people. The things they wrestle with and have to face are unprecedented and I’m often reminded just how much they need our support, encouragement, and most definitely, our “hit our knees” kind of prayers.
I have spoken in youth numerous times but just recently was honored to minister to the adults for all of our six services.  We’ve been in a “God in Movies” series this month, where we take an interesting approach to dissecting the movies we watch and sharing Biblical themes that are often laced throughout them.

The movie I was sharing was War Room. If you haven’t seen it, I encourage you to watch it. For all of us as parents and especially as Christians, it is a gripping call to prayer, to run to our prayer closet or war room, and meet with Jesus. We know this, but if you are like me, you must frequently be reminded that our struggle is not against flesh and blood (Ephesians 6:12), but we have a real adversary, the devil. I am reminded often, as I squabble with my children over schoolwork or chores or you-name-it, that I find myself fighting the wrong enemy. It is always our adversary who’s trying to pit us against each other and have us arguing, complaining, being petty, or straight out fighting.
We have one offensive weapon to counter Satan’s attacks – prayer!

Billy Graham once said, “Before prayer changes others, it first changes us.” And how true it is. Sometimes we go into our prayer closets, ready to lift up a need or maybe argue with the Lord about how so-and-so needs to change - it can’t just be me, right?! But Jesus lovingly comes in and changes our hearts first. He reminds us to take care of the weeds in our own lives. And He is so faithful.
When we sit at His feet, when we prioritize His kingdom first, when we really pray and talk to our Creator/Best Friend/Father/Advocate, He hears us and He brings such beauty out of our ashes.
I pray as each of us begins a new school year, that we will keep a “war room” mindset. Through all of the challenges and hurdles and even major trials we may face, may our times with Jesus be richer, deeper, and more alive than ever before. The world and our enemy may be getting darker, but the light of Christ will only get brighter, and it’s such a privilege that it’s US He chooses to shine His light through.
Love & BIG Prayers,
The Lorenz Family
Please be sure to join our PTF (Parent Teacher Fellowship) for a special Back To School prayer time on Mon, Aug, 8, at 8:30 a.m. and Tue, Aug, 9, at 8:30 a.m. in the Den after you drop off your student. This will be a sweet morning to pause and pray for this school year, our children/students/families and teachers/staff. We look forward to seeing you there!
