New Mercies on Ordinary Mornings

Summer mornings have a way of slowing us down. 

The alarm clocks are a little quieter.

The backpacks are tucked away in the corner.

Lunches don’t have to be packed the night before.

The rush to get everyone out the door has slowed down.

And there is something really special about that.

Summer gives many families a chance to breathe. It invites us to slow down, linger over breakfast a little longer, enjoy spontaneous adventures, and simply be together. These are the moments we often wish for during the busy school year.

But even in these slower mornings, there is something we can easily forget.

God is still at work.

Every single day.

Lamentations 3:22–23 reminds us, “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning.”

What a beautiful promise.

Whether your morning begins with a quiet cup of coffee, the sound of little feet running through the house, teenagers sleeping until noon, or an early trip to the ball field, God meets us there. His grace doesn’t wait for a perfect schedule or a fresh start in August. His mercy is already there when we open our eyes.

Sometimes we think the biggest growth happens during the busy seasons. We celebrate report cards, achievements, performances, and milestones. But God often does His deepest work in the ordinary moments, the conversations around the dinner table, the family walks after sunset, the laughter (or loud disagreements) over a board game, or the quiet moments spent reading His Word together.

Parents, you don’t have to fill every day with elaborate plans to make this summer meaningful. Some of the sweetest memories are made in simple moments of connection. A prayer before heading to the pool. A conversation during a car ride. Reading a Bible story before bed. Small, faithful moments have a way of leaving a lasting impact.

Students, summer is also an opportunity to keep growing, not just in what you learn, but in who you are becoming. Keep asking questions. Keep showing kindness. Keep working on your summer assignments ;). Keep looking for ways to encourage others. Most importantly, keep making room for God in your day. He has wonderful things to teach you, even when school is out.

As we enjoy these slower days, let’s not miss the quiet ways God is moving. Every new morning is another opportunity to begin again, to trust Him a little more, and to receive the grace He so generously gives.

Before long, backpacks will be zipped, our Cornerstone classrooms will be filled, and busy routines will return. But until then, let’s embrace these ordinary summer mornings with grateful hearts, knowing they are anything but ordinary in God’s hands.

May your home be filled with laughter, your hearts be refreshed, and your family be reminded each morning that God’s mercies are new, His love is constant, and His faithfulness never fails.

Here's your summer challenge: Before your feet hit the floor tomorrow morning, pause for just a moment. Start by asking one simple question: "God, what do You have for us today?" You might be surprised how He shows up in the most ordinary moments. On Friday, July 10, from 7:00–8:30 p.m., we invite you to gather in the Cornerstone Den for His Faithfulness Continues, a special summer worship night led by Cornerstone alumni. Through worship, testimony, and celebration, we’ll be reminded that God’s mercies truly are new every morning and that His faithfulness continues long after graduation.
