New Year, New Heights

Haven Caskey, Cornerstone seventh-grade student, proves that perseverance makes anything possible! From overcoming fears after a fall to balancing schoolwork, training, and competitions, she shows that stepping out of your comfort zone leads to remarkable growth. Let Haven’s story inspire you in this New Year- it’s never too late to try something new. Whether taking on a new hobby or facing a challenge, the rewards are worth every leap of faith!

I first got interested in horseback riding when I was five years old. Our neighbors invited me to a day camp at their barn, and I absolutely loved it. When my mom made me choose between horses and dance, I immediately chose horses.

Mastering The Basics

When I first started riding horses, it was a little overwhelming. The first thing I had to learn was just to get comfortable sitting on the horse. At first, it felt so different from anything I had ever done, but slowly, I worked my way up. Next, I learned to get the horse into a trot, then a canter. I was terrified of cantering at first. Over time, I felt more and more comfortable.

One day, my trainer noticed I was ready for the next challenge. She told me it was time to try riding bareback. I was nervous, but I gave it a shot. I cantered bareback for the first time… and fell off! I’ll never forget what my trainer told me afterward: “You’re not a good horse rider until you’ve fallen off at least 10 times.” This meant falling was part of the process, and the most important thing was getting back up. So, I dusted myself off and tried again. Once I became comfortable with the walk, trot, and canter, I began competing in horse shows.

Chasing New Challenges

After I got comfortable with riding, my trainer introduced me to jumping. At first, I jumped a small ground pole, and little by little, we raised it higher. I started jumping what is called cross rails, and then I slowly worked my way up to verticals. Jumping has become one of my favorite parts of riding, and I love competing in it.

This past fall, I joined an equestrian team through the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA). Right now, we’re in the middle of the show season, and one of my goals is to qualify for Regionals in March. In IEA, riders have five chances to compete and earn 18 points to qualify for Regionals. So far, I’ve completed two shows and earned 7 points, leaving me 11 more to reach my goal. With three shows left, I’m feeling hopeful that I can make it happen. If I then place either First or Second at Regionals, I will go on to compete at a National level in April. My trainer challenges me every week, pushing me to reach higher goals, and it’s helping me improve.

Balancing Act: Juggling School, Training, And Competitions

Attending a University-Model® School three days a week has given me the flexibility I need to balance my schoolwork and my horseback riding. The University Model has been perfect for me. It allows me time to focus on training and competitions while also keeping up with my schoolwork. It’s not always easy, but the structure and routine of my week helps me to stay on track with both school and riding.

Overcoming Setbacks

My journey has had plenty of challenges. I’ve fallen off horses many times, and that can be very scary, especially when it is a big horse! I can't even count how many times, but it feels like it’s been at least 40 times - but I always get back on. I had a scary moment recently when my trainer had me ride a horse I don’t typically ride. Her name is Prada and she is a rescue horse, and she is an ex-racehorse. Horses who come from the race track often live in fear, and are skeptical of people. So, when I got on her I got nervous and she could tell so she took off galloping uncontrollably. Once I gained control, my trainer swapped to a different bridle that helped me slow down. With that change, I regained control and confidence.

I was able to prove to myself that I could handle it. I rode the horse through a beautiful jump round, and it felt amazing! The scary moments have taught me that facing fear and pushing through it leads to growth.

Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble at them, for the Lord your God is the one who goes with you. He will not fail you or forsake you.”  Deuteronomy 31:6

Nothing Is Impossible

Looking back, I can see how much I’ve accomplished, and it’s all because of hard work and the belief that nothing is impossible. I know that If I continue to work hard and trust in God’s plan for me, I can achieve even more. One of my dreams is to one day become a professional rider, and I believe with effort, dedication, and faith, I can make that dream a reality.

Keep Pushing Forward

Horseback riding has taught me to step outside my comfort zone. It has taught me that when I face fear or challenges I can push through it. I approach every challenge now with a “just do it” attitude, and I can’t imagine my life without horses. The effort I put in today will pay off tomorrow. If you’re facing something new or difficult, remember that you’re capable of more than you think. Whether it’s riding horses, or trying a new hobby, don't let fear hold you back.

"Trust the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6
