The Light That Breaks the Darkness

The Light That Breaks the Darkness

The Light That Breaks The Darkness

A heartfelt Christmas reflection from Mr. Brandon Miller, Cornerstone Prep’s IT Director

Dear friends,

Christmas is upon us. Lights twinkling, tables overflowing with food, and the sound of laughter filling our homes. Many of us will gather with family and friends, carry on cherished traditions, and watch little ones tear into that one gift they’ve been dreaming about for months. Gifts will be exchanged; some will be treasured forever, while others will be quietly listed on marketplace sites the next day.

Yet for others, this season feels heavier.

Some will set the table with one less plate this year.

Some will spend Christmas Eve in a hotel room far from home.

Some children will wake up without Mom or Dad beside them, hoping a kind stranger picked their paper angel from the tree at the local restaurant.

Christmas magnifies both the beauty and the brokenness of life in a fallen world. Joy and sorrow sit side-by-side, often at the very same table.

My favorite Christmas song has always been O Holy Night. When I was a kid, back in the ancient days of radio, I would wait all season for our local station to finally play it. I loved the beautiful melody long before I understood a single word.

Then, years later, after I came to know Jesus, the lyrics finally made sense:

O holy night, the stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of our dear Savior’s birth!
Long lay the world in sin and error pining
Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.

“Long lay the world in sin and error pining
Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth.”

That line breaks me every time.

We know the ache of a world that isn’t right. We feel it when death steals someone we love. We feel it when we lose yet another battle with the same stubborn sin. We feel it when the news cycle never seems to end with good tidings of great joy. The world is weary, and so are we.

But God…

In the middle of the darkest night, a Light broke through.

The eternal Son of God, the King of glory, slipped quietly into history as a baby asleep. He came to tell every weary, wounded soul:

“You are seen. You are loved. You are worth everything to Me.”

This Christmas, whether your house is full of family and joyful noise or a quiet aching, hear the good news again:

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

John 1:5 (ESV)

And one day soon:

“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

Revelation 21:4 (ESV)

So light the candles. Sing the songs.

Hug the people you love a little tighter.

Reach out to the one who is alone.

But above all,  rejoice! Our King has come, sin is defeated, and the new and glorious morn is breaking even now.

Fall on your knees.

Hear the angel voices.

Christ is born in Bethlehem.

Merry Christmas, dear Cornerstone family.

The thrill of hope has come, and He is making all things new.

With love and great joy,
Mr. Miller
