Two Paths, One Faithfulness

Two Paths, One Faithfulness

What does it look like when two lives, shaped in the same hallways, grounded in the same truth, step into completely different callings… and yet reflect the same faithfulness?

For Maddie (Class of 2020) and Noble Cusick (Class of 2023), the answer is unfolding in real time.

And in a world that constantly measures success by performance, platforms, and pressure, what stands out most about these siblings isn’t just what they’re doing, it’s how they’re doing it.

Maddie: Faith in the Middle of Pressure

If you were to walk into a lab at the University of Georgia, you might find Maddie studying something most of us never think about, fungal genetics.

As a second-year PhD candidate, her research focuses on how pathogenic fungi adapt to high temperatures, allowing them to survive and cause disease in humans. It’s complex. It’s demanding. And, at times, it’s overwhelming.

“Attempting to get both a bachelor’s and a PhD in biological science means facing constant intellectual challenges,” she shared.

But the real story isn’t just the rigor of her work, it’s what holds her steady in it.

“I am a rather anxious person….I put a lot of pressure on myself to succeed.”

That pressure could easily define her. It often does for people in her field. But instead, Maddie learned something early on that continues to reshape how she walks through every challenge:

“My worth is in God and not in the works I can complete in this world.”

That truth didn’t come overnight. It was cultivated during her years at Cornerstone, through relationships, through mentorship, and through a consistent reminder that identity is not earned, but given.

"Going to a Christian school allowed me to develop coping mechanisms centered around Christ that I still use in my day-to-day life.”

Now, when the weight feels too heavy, she doesn’t push harder, she pauses. “When I feel overwhelmed and not enough, I pray…I ask earnestly for peace, as I know I am unable to produce this for myself.”

And somehow, in the middle of uncertainty and unanswered questions, questions she’s literally trying to solve through research, she finds clarity.

“If I am where He wants me, then I have no doubt He will support me.”

Noble: Faith in the Middle of Motion

While Maddie’s life revolves around labs and research papers, Noble Cusick has been discovering his voice through a very different lens: the stage.

After graduating from Cornerstone in 2023, Noble enrolled at Lenoir-Rhyne University in North Carolina, pursuing a degree in Mass Communications with a minor in Theater. He is also a Division II athlete on the men’s swim team, balancing academics, athletics, and his creative passions.

Theater became a pivotal part of Noble’s senior year at Cornerstone. “Joining theatre my senior year was one of my favorite experiences,” he recalled. “It gave me a place to explore my creative ideas, express myself, and connect with my peers in a completely new way.”

What started as a high school interest has grown into a meaningful part of his life. Noble has embraced acting, stage production, and storytelling as a way to communicate, inspire, and even influence others. It’s a space where he combines his love of performance with the values Cornerstone instilled, collaboration, discipline, and service.

“The IMPACT trips we took each year also shaped me,” he said, reflecting on the importance of community and mission work. “They taught me to care for those around me and to approach every project, whether on stage or off, with intentionality and heart.”

Faith plays a central role in Noble’s journey. “Cornerstone taught me to trust where the Lord puts me,” he said. “Theater, swimming, academics, it’s all part of a path He’s guiding me along.”

Through theater, Noble has discovered that creativity and faith can intersect in powerful ways. Performing isn’t just about being seen, it’s about listening, reflecting, and communicating truth. It’s about showing courage on the stage and in life, trusting that God can use even the spotlight to teach and inspire.

Connecting it All

On paper, their lives couldn’t look more different.

One is studying microscopic organisms in a lab. The other is performing, communicating, and competing in the pool.

But beneath it all is the same foundation.

Both learned how to handle pressure.

Both learned how to pursue excellence.

Both learned how to keep going when things feel hard.

And most importantly, both learned where their identity comes from.

Maddie said it this way, “Success means experiencing the highs and lows of life while remaining kind.”

Noble puts it differently,  “Success is getting 1% better every day.”

Different words. Same truth!

What They Want You to Know

If you asked them what really matters, what they would say to students walking the same halls they once did, their answers are refreshingly honest.

“Do things you’re interested in and don’t worry if you’re not good at them,” Maddie says. “You have so much time to learn.”

“Be a forever learner,” Noble adds. “Always learning how to better your craft.”

It’s not about having it all figured out. It’s about being willing to grow, to try, to fail, and to trust God in the middle of it.

A Life That Points Beyond Itself

At the end of the day, this isn’t just a story about a PhD candidate or a college athlete.

It’s about two lives that are choosing daily to trust God in very real, very different circumstances.

Maddie is asking for prayer as she continues her PhD journey and seeks direction for what comes next.

Noble is asking for prayer for peace and rest in a season that rarely slows down.

And maybe that’s what makes their story so compelling.

Not perfection.

But dependence.

Because long after the degrees are earned, and the races are finished, that’s what will remain.

A life rooted in Christ and a faith that shows up wherever He leads.

Maddie and Noble remind us that faith isn’t confined to one path, it shows up in labs, on stages, in classrooms, and in everyday moments. So what might God be inviting you to step into? Where is He asking you to trust Him a little more, try something new, or use your gifts boldly?

This Friday, March 20, we invite you to join us at our Spring Fling Talent Show (6–8 p.m.) and watch our students step out in courage, creativity, and faith. You might just be inspired to take your own next step.
