North Georgia is no stranger to the farm-to-table concept. Which at its heart, means that the food on the table came directly from a specific farm, without going through a store, market, or distributor along the way.
Cornerstone parents John and Stefanie Cunningham, along with two other families, own and operate Slate Creek Farm, located in the foothills of North Georgia. The Cunningham family organically and sustainably grows top-quality vegetables for the Bartow, Cobb, and Paulding county markets.
The Heart of Slate Creek Farm
“I have worked my entire professional career as an engineer in the telecommunications industry,” said John. “I have always enjoyed the outdoors and nature. My interest in farming started when I began helping out a friend with chores on his hobby farm.”
Simultaneously, this has inspired the same love for agriculture in their daughters, Avery (13), Addyson (11), and Alyssa (8). Avery and Addison enjoy the farm animals as well as preparing and harvesting the vegetables. Alyssa added, “My favorite part of having a farm is the endless tomatoes!”
Why University-Model® Schooling?
The Cunningham family just joined the Cornerstone family during the 2019-20 school year, but they have already seen the benefits of the University-Model® of schooling.
“I have really enjoyed the culture and experience that Cornerstone brings to education," said John. "The University-Model® has allowed our family to spend much more time together."
Stefanie, who worked as a school teacher for over 20 years, is now a stay-at-home mom and works directly with the girls with their studies.
“We are both significantly more involved in what our kids are learning and how they are learning it.” added Stefanie. “This enables us to have a bigger impact on their lives, what can be more important than that?”
Their daughters also enjoy the advantages of the University-Model® of schooling. Oldest daughter Avery commented, “I enjoy the freedom and flexibility that goes along with the Cornerstone schedule.” I enjoy the teachers and close connections with them,” says Addyson. And youngest daughter Alyssa enjoys meeting new friends at Cornerstone.
Practicing Sustainable Agriculture
The Cunninghams are a happy farm family and a vibrant addition to the local Georgia agriculture.
“As my family grew, my desire to provide them with clean wholesome food really turned up my interest,” said John.
Slate Creek Farm does not use any synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, or any other chemicals.
“We work on developing the microbiotic life and nutritional value of the soil in harmony with nature to produce vegetables that are not only superior in quality but are also the most nutritious for our customers,” added John. "We sell our produce directly to consumers at local farmers' markets and through preorder pick up locations. This allows us to provide fresh, recently harvested produce for our customers. We are actively growing the farm and plan to increase produce variety and availability throughout the growing seasons.”
Despite the around-the-clock care a farm demands, in the end, they are thankful they’re able to pursue their passions while partnering with Cornerstone as they raise three wonderful daughters in the great outdoors.
