Around Cornerstone: News

Students Build Faith-Forming Habits

On the first Wednesday of each month, you'll find the music room here at Cornerstone filled with sleepy faces, boxes of donuts, and a growing number of teenagers ready to dig into God's Word.

First Wednesday Prayer group began in 2018 when Alexa Cosgrove and Josiah Norris, class of 2019 graduates, felt there needed to be a space where peers could minister to the student body. First Wednesday Prayer includes middle and high school students who are striving to establish a student-led core of believers who worship, learn, and lead together under Christ.

Christian Smith, a 12th grade student leader, said this group has given him a ministry opportunity he didn’t have previously.

“I love being able to share the words that God has put on my heart for these students,” he said.

Although the meeting time is short, the prayer time provides tangible benefits for the students.

“It is a wonderful time to fellowship and meet with the Lord as well as develop a prayer covering over the school,” said Smith.

Each monthly meeting begins with a short time for fellowship, followed by reading scripture and discussing a timely, relatable message prepared by one of three student leaders. The group is currently focused on the Book of James. Their time comes to a close as students share praises and prayer requests.

“We really dive into the scriptures and talk about how they can be applied to our lives,” Smith added.

They are also constantly seeking ways in which to reach others with the love of Christ. Last winter, the group decided to write thank you notes to all of the Cornerstone staff. This was a wonderful experience for everyone involved, and they look forward to doing it again this year.

Smith said the group is growing in numbers each month. Newest attendee Danica Shannon (8) enjoys it because she feels truly welcome by everyone.

“I joined First Wednesday because I wanted to grow more in my walk with Jesus,” said Riley Galat, 11th grade student and prayer leader. “During this time, I've gotten to know more of the students at the school and help them grow in their walk. My favorite part about First Wednesday is the community that we've built with each other, and obviously the donuts!”

First Wednesday Prayer meets next on Wed, Feb 5, at 7:45 a.m. in room B124, and it is open to all secondary students. They would love to see you there, and don’t forget to bring your Bible!
